Hundreds of thousands mark the anniversary of the former prime minister's assassination. Campaigning begins for the June elections pitting the Western-backed coalition and the Hezbollah-led camp.

Hundreds of thousands of Lebanese poured into the streets of Beirut on Saturday to remember slain former Prime Minister Rafik Hariri.


Buffalo plane crash was 'instantaneous,' investigator says

'It was a sudden catastrophic event that took place and then 30 seconds later it impacted,' an NTSB investigator says. Recovery efforts are slowed as water that doused the wreckage turns to ice.

Reporting from Clarence Center, N.Y. -- Ice and cold temperatures hampered recovery and investigation efforts today of the Continental Airlines turboprop plane that crashed Thursday night, as nearly 150 emergency workers and volunteers combed the crash scene while local residents handed out pizza and drinks.


Missiles hit compound in Pakistan

About 30 die in the attack, apparently by a U.S. drone. The dead are believed linked to the Taliban or Al Qaeda.

Reporting from Peshawar, Pakistan and Istanbul, Turkey — In the most lethal such strike since President Obama took office, suspected U.S. missiles today slammed into a compound near the Afghanistan border, killing about 30 people, by the count of local officials.


Business the big winner in California budget plan

Firms would get nearly $1 billion in breaks, while the average person would pay higher taxes five ways. Republicans say the plan would create jobs, but others dispute the claim.

The average Californian's taxes would shoot up five different ways in the state budget blueprint that lawmakers hope to vote on this weekend. But the bipartisan plan for wiping out the state's giant deficit isn't so bad for large corporations, many of which would receive a permanent windfall.
