USC to buy 2 campus hospitals from Tenet Healthcare

The university will pay $275 million for USC University Hospital and USC Kenneth Norris Jr. Cancer Hospital, ending a dispute between the school and the hospital chain over control of the facilities.

The University of Southern California has agreed to pay Tenet Healthcare Corp. $275 million to acquire USC University Hospital and USC Kenneth Norris Jr. Cancer Hospital, ending a three-year dispute over control.


Geithner unveils bank rescue plan

The plan could cost as much as $2 trillion, the Treasury secretary says, and will be risky.

Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner this morning unveiled the Obama administration's $1.5-trillion-to-$2-trillion plan for stabilizing the nation's malfunctioning financial markets, including a public-private partnership to boost lending, warning that the new strategy "will cost money, involve risk and take time."

Southern California forecast: Calm before the next storm

Only a 20% chance of rain is predicted for the next few days, but that will rise again to 50% by late Friday. Downtown L.A. has received about 13% of its annual average rainfall since Thursday night.

Four days of on-again, off-again rain and strong wind continued to snarl rush-hour traffic, trigger mudslides, flood intersections and inflict scattered power outages Monday, but the National Weather Service said relief was in sight.


Death toll rises in Australian fire

Windy conditions may spread flames, and dozens more bodies are found. Police say the total could reach 300.

As police searched for two people suspected of arson, the death toll from southern Australia's wildfires rose to 181 today and the country's prime minister angrily condemned what he called murder.
